Hudson Quarter set to ‘Break Ground’ at this year’s York Ice Trail with the help of local student We’re delighted to be supporting York Ice Trail 2020 with an exciting partnership between Hudson Quarter and All Saints Roman Catholic School in York.

 Weronika, a year 10 student at the school, has been chosen to design a sculpture for the event to fit this year’s theme of ‘Fantastical Fiction and Fairy Tales’.

 As one of the residential agents for Hudson Quarter, one of our directors, Tarnia Hudson, approached the school to ask them to be involved with this exciting project and All Saints Art and Design subject leader, Phil Norton, handpicked Weronika as the perfect student to undertake the commission.

  With the brief to create a sculpture which was in keeping with the ‘Fantastical Fiction and Fairy Tales’ theme of the York Ice Trail, Weronika’s contemporary design takes inspiration from popular Japanese fantasy anime characters.

The sculpture is named ‘Breaking Ground’ as it depicts the ground literally being broken and metaphorically represents the ‘ground-breaking’ nature of Hudson Quarter as one of the first new developments to be constructed within the historic city walls for many years.

 The fantastic ice sculpture is one of 40 that will feature across York this weekend, 1st – 2nd February.

The magical trail is a great opportunity for York residents and visitors to explore the city and includes an interactive carving wall on Parliament Street where visitors can try ice sculpting and live ice carving on St Sampsons Square.
