4 ways to create a greener home Saving energy at home is becoming an increasingly important topic for home owners, with recent research from The Telegraph showing that 6 out of 10 people would like to save more energy at home and a high percentage would be willing to sacrifice home comforts in order to save energy.
As well as this, when it comes to selling your home it is extremely helpful to have a high rating on your Energy Performance Certificate.
With this in mind, we will look at a few ways in which you can save energy in your home.
1 - Improve your insulationWhile many of us know it’s important not to leave the heating on for too long and to dry clothes on the washing line when the sun is shining, we often don’t realise that much of the energy we use to heat our homes is being lost due to poor insulation.
Home owners should be sure to check their attics and walls to make sure they are well insulated; insulation can be picked up fairly cheaply and can make a big difference to the amount of heat loss that is happening throughout your home.
Heat can also be lost through old windows and door seals which create draughts and mean you have to use more heat to get the house warm.
Double glazing of windows and proper weather proof seals can help to lock in the heat and save on energy.
2 - Pick energy efficient appliancesDid you know that energy saving light bulbs can use as much as 80% less energy than a standard light bulb? Getting rid of inefficient, old appliances which drain resources can be a smart move to make.
3 - Reduce wastageReducing wastage across your property can have a big impact on the amount of energy you use.
Implementing small changes like switching off electronics when they aren’t in use instead of leaving them set on standby, only using the dishwasher when it is full and moving items of furniture that might be blocking radiators away from your furniture can make a significant impact over time.
4 - Consider solar panelsSolar panels have increased in popularity in recent years and because of this the price of having them installed has also dropped with some home owners even turning a profit for the electricity that they produce.
As well as helping to save you money, making significant changes to your home to save more energy can have a real impact on the value of your home should you decide to sell.
